EBYMBC 2017 Winter Series - 17 June 2017

Crew: Peter, Eduardo, Paul, Helen, Graciela, Geoff.

Forecast: Northerly 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots for a time late morning and afternoon.

Our plan was:

11.00 Assemble at Halo at Chaffers Marina
11.15 Depart to sail round to Evans Bay and tie up at the dock next to the QuickSlip
11.45 Arrive at Evans Bay clubhouse to sign on for the race, get the latest course info, have lunch, etc.
12.15 Back on Halo
12.45 The warning signal for the Cruising/Keeler Division sounds.
12.50 Race starts!

All went to plan except the wind was a lot less than forecasted and so the race course was shortened to a top mark placed at Pt Halswell.

Departed Chaffers at 1121 hrs and motored round to Evans Bay and tied up at the Slipway pier at 1158 hrs. At that stage the wind was still a light northerly. After visiting the clubhouse for sign on etc., we returned to Halo and rigged up the No. 1 LT Headsail, prepared our largest spinnaker and cast off at 1230 hrs.

The wind changed to southerly just before the race. We crossed the start line at 1253 hrs at the back of the bunch but with our already prepared spinnaker hoisted, we crossed the start and made steady progress up Evans Bay passing a number of the other boats. At the top mark what little wind we had (1-5 kts) wind died out and many of the boats bunched up drifting around creating some congestion.

We eventually got some speed up for the beat back down Evans Bay. Eventually the southerly picked up to about 6 kts and we tacked our way back to cross the finish line at 1522 hrs.

Halo and crew performed well. We came 4th out of 9 boats in line honours and 6th after handicaps were applied. See results sheet below. Not bad for a first effort!

Lesson learned: Need to assign one crew to watch for the start signals as none of us saw (or heard) the 5 min warning signal.
