Marine Forecast: Southerly 10 knots, rising to 15 knots early evening and to 20 knots late evening. Sea becoming moderate. Fine apart from evening cloud.

Beautiful afternoon with encouraging Metservice marine forecast prompted last minute decision to go sailing with Peter and Brent.

Left at 4.30pm after Peter got out of work. Unfortunately the predicted southerlies never eventuated so we had a very sedate sail over to Somes Island with about 3 kts of wind. We tried tieing up at the mooring on the north side of the island but was not satisfactory due to bumping into the large red metal floater. Anyway had time for cup of tea and sandwich before heading back.

To our surprise the wind suddenly switched to a nice strong northerly so with the main and No,1 genoa still up we made a brisk run pack to port reaching around 6.5 kts (SOG). We spotted Graciela and her team on the Muir 8.2 training boat heading towards Somes Island.

We had the fishing rod trailing the boat with a spinner and suddenly Brent noticed we had caught something. I had finger problems with the new fishing rod and got the line all twisted and couldn't wind in the fish. We didn't want to stop and lose the nice wind so kept the fish trailing behind us until we stopped back at Wellington to discover a nice big kahawai on the hook. My first catch on Halo!

Back in marina and packed up by 8pm.
