Metservice Forecast: Variable 5 knots. Southerly 15 knots developing this morning, rising to 20 knots but 25 knots gusting 35 knots about the south coast in the afternoon then easing to 15 knots in the evening. Sea becoming rough about the south coast in the afternoon, easing in the evening. Cloudy periods.

Crew - Grant, Brent, Graciela and Geoff

Grant and I took Halo round to the fuel jetty and topped up the diesel tank - 25 lts. Brent and Graciela then joined us and we departed at 1035 hrs.

We started out with Genoa # 3 and 2nd reef in the Mainsail. Crossing Evans bay we were doing 6.5 kts but the boat was fairly hard to handle in the gusts so after passing Pt Halswell decided to swap out the # 3 with the Storm Jib in the shelter of Kau Bay. Made the boat much easier to control although speed dropped noticeably.

Once we got back into the full force of the southerly our speed varied from 4.5 to 6 kts as we beat our way south down the channel towards Wellington Heads passing Rear Lead Light, Falcon Shoals Light, Front Lead Light and Steeple Rock with swell increasing and some good waves getting us wet!

Reached Barrett Reef Buoy (moaning Minnie) at 1300 hrs. 2 hrs 23 min after leaving Chaffers and turned around heading home with a tail wind averaging 5-6 kts.

Arrived back home in the marina at 1430 hrs. Tracked the route with OpenCPN. Time enroute: 04.08 Total distance: 18.16 nautical miles.
