Downwind Techniques with Jason - 13 Feb 2016

posted 12 Feb 2016, 14:08 by Geoff Head   [ updated 5 Dec 2017, 10:28 ]
Marine Forecast: Northerly 10 knots easing to variable 5 knots this morning. Southerly 10 knots developing time, dying out this evening. Sea slight. Fine.

Crew: Jason, Graciela, Geoff

The easy southerlies were ideal for a short sail to try out downwind techniques for the first time. Jason, who is on Graciela's Cruising Crew course, joined us and proved to be a valuable asset to the team. We left Chaffers at 1430 hrs and rigged the No.2 Headsail and full main.

Set our course for downwind and successfully rigged the Gybe Preventer and then rigged the spinnaker pole and aft guy onto the Jib to try Goose-winged sailing. See video below.

All went perfectly except for a slight error when Geoff inadvertently released the gybe preventer (mistaking it for a jib sheet - not thinking!) and we went into an unexpected gybe. Lesson learned: use a different coloured rope for the gybe preventer to the job sheets.

Returned to Chaffers marina at 1600 hrs.
